Life Skills and Narratives- The Story of Value Creation
A friend of mine used to misplace his pens very often.
He would only buy inexpensive ones so that it wouldn’t bother him if he lost them.
What worried him wasn’t the money — it was the habit of being careless.
One day, I suggested something simple:
“Buy the most valuable pen you can.”
He took that advice seriously and bought a 22-carat gold pen.
We spoke this morning after nearly six months.
I asked him if he still loses pens.
He smiled and said, “Not anymore.”
He was surprised at how effortlessly the change happened.
I told him gently — there was nothing wrong with him.
The value of the pen changed the care he gave to it.
And that is exactly how life works.
We are careful with whatever we value.
When we value our health, we nourish our mind, body and spirit consciously.
When we value our relationships, we hold them with tenderness.
When we value resources and money, we use them wisely.
When we value time, we create with intention rather than waste it.
When we value other living beings, we treat them with dignity.
And when we value nature, we protect it rather than exploit it.
Most of us realise the true value of something only when we are close to losing it.
But life becomes richer when we learn to value things — while we still have them.
